Activists say Shell violates interior dept’s 2013 rule

Department of Interior is being requested to block Royal Dutch Shell’s 2015 oil exploration plan by the environmental groups. This is a part of struggle between green activists to protect complex ecology of arctic from Shell, the oil corporation with bad environmental record. The deep sea oil drilling project by the company is expected to destroy walrus habitats in the region.
Looks like activists are trying all possible ways to stop Shell from creating another ecological disaster. The press widely covered unique kayaktivists protests in the Seattle, where they tried to block Shells oil rig at the port. Greenpeace, global environmental conservation group even sued Shell in the court. Due to strong government support the Greenpeace received restraining orders from the court.

Now activists are saying that Shell would be violating the policy implemented by Interior Department’s Fish and Wildlife Service. The rule bars all oil companies from exploring and drilling in the Alaska’s Chukchi Sea. The policy was aimed at protecting walruses in the region as drilling noise will affect sensitive creatures. The simultaneous drilling would be conducted by Shell in the region and ironically the drilling has been approved by the Interior Department.

10 environmental groups wrote joint letter to Sally Jewell, Interior Secretary. Michael LeVine informed that Shell should be allowed to go ahead as per its plan according to this government rule. He is legal counsel of Oceana, one of the ten environmental groups lobbying of protection.  Oil production won’t begin in the region so soon but corporation has invested around $7 billion in the exploration.
